shedding dreams
March 18, 2019
you can hold a dream tightly
expand it with your soul
invest yourself in it completely
and it can still die
trickling through your fingers like sand
or in one decisive avalanche
it’s gone
you land on your bottom
in the smoking wreckage
waves of grief and anger
beat against you
you were the dream
and now
you are the wreck
the healing is slow
painful
not quite complete
but you put yourself out there again
after several go-rounds
you build a membrane between yourself
and the next dream
pack on some insulation
and prepare for re-entry
you commit your time and energy
but not yourself
at times you hope this one will be a go
but carefully
and when the dream dies
you shed it
like a butterfly shedding its chrysalis
you rise on the thermals
lightly
the wreckage
mere compost
for your next dream
